You Need a Mom Cave

Kelly Porter's Mom Cave

We all have heard the term Man Cave. It’s that part of the house that’s reserved just for him. His place of escape. Usually lacks decorating style and a feminine touch is nowhere to be found.

Well, do you have a Mom Cave?

I first heard this term from Kelly Porter, owner of Porter House Designs. She has been helping me with my home renovation project.

From a Washington Post article entitled “Designer creates affordable home office that suits her style”, Kelly states about her own space, “It’s really become my sanctuary. If I shut the door I really feel like I’m in a different place. I call it my mom cave.”

Is there a place in your home that you can call your own? Maybe it’s a special reading corner in your house, or a desk near the kitchen that you have claimed. For moms who work from home, maybe that’s your home office. No matter how big or small, you need an area that is totally you. An area that makes you feel happy when you enter it. Your mom cave.

Is your environment hindering you from accomplishing your goals?

Your physical environment tells a lot about who you are and how you operate. Is your space so cluttered that you can’t think, or is it a calming environment. Yes, I know that it’s hard to keep a house clean with children, but even kids thrive better in an organized, clutter-free environment.

Am I guilty of occasional clutter? Of course! But then I push to get things back to where they should be, and because I work from home, this is even more crucial.

Now, your home and work space don’t have to be perfect, but they do have to be organized. Organized in a way that allows you to be more efficient, and allows you to attack your goals in a more systematic way.

So, claim your space, then make it your own. Your space should reflect you and should energize you when you come into it.

Kelly shared how she created her Mom Cave:

  • The first thing she did was to start with a color palette. She choose her three favorite colors: lavender; aqua; and chocolate brown. She also chose an accent color of orange because she felt it would add energy to the space.
  • In choosing furniture, she had to choose pieces that would balance all the color she had going on in that small space. She chose white furniture. “I needed the eyes to rest on something. The white breaks up the room and makes everything more peaceful,” she states.
  • Finally, she finished by adding photos of her family, cushions, and accessories that were pretty yet practical.

Now your taste may be totally different than Kelly’s, but I hope this has given you some food for thought as well as some great ideas for getting started with the creation of your own “Mom Cave”.
